Crete - Mykonos, summer 2009

3 settimane meravigliosi tra Creta, la meta ormai fissa ogni estate per noi, e Mykonos, la novità di quest'anno, dove siamo stati ospiti a Kouros Hotel, l'albergo dei nostri amici.

Lascio raccontare dalle foto le meraviglie di queste due isole greche.

We had a fantastic 3 week vacation between Crete, which has become a tradition for us, and Mykonos where we were pampered and treated like royalty at the Kouros Hotel by our friends.

Without further ado I will let the photos tell the marvels of these two beautiful Greek islands.

9 settimane di gioia... / 9 weeks of bliss...

...e duro lavoro! Il corso di fotografia di Karen Russell è finito da una settimana e sono tristissima. E' stata una delle esperienze più belle della mia vita.
Il corso dura 9 settimane di cui 8 di lezioni ed una settimana di pausa che era veramente necessaria dopo cinque settimane di intenso lavoro. Mai mi sarei aspettata di imparare così tanto. Ero completamente a digiuna di fotografia, ho scattato foto con la mia Nikon D40 per 2 anni e mezzo tenendola sempre su "automatico" e mai sapendo assolutamente nulla del diaframma, della velocità dei tempi, della sensibilità ISO, dell'esposizione, dell'illuminazione e di tante altre cose. Adesso posso dire di capire che cosa sto facendo, il che non vuol dire che sono diventata una fotografa coi fiocchi, ma che adesso ho i mezzi e la conoscenza di poter migliorare la qualità delle mie fotografie e di documentare sempre di più la mia vita e quella dei miei cari.
Un grazie enorme a Karen che ha la rara abilità di saper INSEGNARE e di farti  davvero IMPARARE, e a tutte le compagne di viaggio che continuo a frequentare su Facebook e su Flickr dove abbiamo il nostro gruppo.
Rimango in attesa che Karen prepari un corso avanzato! Dall'inizio del corso ho acquistato l'obiettivo 50 mm f/1.4 che è fenomenale, ho comprato la Nikon 90D che ancora sto studiando e ho già ordinato l'obiettivo Tamron 17-50 mm f/2.8. Sono una donna felice ed appagata :)

PS. Per i prossimi corsi di Karen, uno a settembre e l'altro a gennaio 2010, la pre-iscrizione è il 29 giugno. Per poter accedere alla pre-iscrizione, devi essere in lista d'attesa. e per essere in lista d'attesa devi registrarti sul sito di Karen. Il corso lo raccomando vivamente a chiunque abbia voglia di imparare a fare delle foto più belle.

... and hard work! Karen Russell's Photographers' Workshop ended a week ago and I'm crushed. It  has been one of the best experiences of my life which I will cherish for a long time.
The whole course is 9 weeks with 8 weeks of lessons and 1 week of break which was highly needed after intense five weeks of lessons. I would have never thought to learn so much. I was a complete novice as far as photography goes. I had been shooting with my Nikon D40 for 2,5 years without having a clue of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure, lighting and hundreds of other things. Now I can say that I understand what I'm doing which doesn't mean that I'm a first class photographer, but that I have the means and the tools to improve my photography skills and to to better document my life and that of my loved ones.
An enormous THANK YOU goes to Karen who has the rare quality of  knowing how to TEACH and to really make you LEARN, and to my fellow students who I continue to see on Facebook and the Flickr group we have created.

I'll be waiting for Karen to start an advanced course! I purchased the 50mm f/1.4 lens recommended by Karen even before the class started and it has truly changed my life. Better yet I have now the Nikon D90 which I'm still studying and I have ordered the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens. Am I ever so happy :)

PS. The pre-registration for the next two classes of Karen, one in September and one in January 2010, will take place on June 29. You have to be on a waiting list for one of her classes to have access to the pre-registration. The places go in 5 minutes flat so you better hurry!  I highly recommend the class to anyone who is interested in learning to take better pictures.

Coolio and @ Lisa's

Altri  2 layout ispirati dai Daily Prompts di Cocoa Daisy.

Nel "Coolio" ho fatto prima la mia base spruzzando Glimmer Mist (Twilight) sul cardstock bianco dove avevo posizionato alcuni template (mask) di Tim Holtz. Per questa ispirazioni dovevamo usare degli stickers avanzati e li ho usati come decorazione scrivendo aggettivi e altre parole "cool" dei teenagers.
La foto l'ho scattata ad Andrea all'inizio del mio corso di fotografia a marzo.

In "Coolio" we had to use leftover stickers in a creative way - I used them to form some "cool" teenager words which are a part of the background. I started out with a white Bazzill cardstock. I dug out my Glimmer mists and used Twilight and some Tim Holtz's masks to create the background.
The photo was taken in March when I started my photography class.

Nel secondo layout dovevamo usare carte vecchie. Io ho usato 3 patterned vecchie di Basic Grey della collezione Oh, Baby Boy. Da una carta ho ritagliato il bordo a cerchietti sopra la carta a strisce.
Per dare un po' di dimensione e profondità ho scartavetrato i bordi delle foto e cucito a mano qualche punto di qua e di là.
Le strisce di journaling raccontano di quello che è piaciuto di più ad Andrea quando siamo stati ospiti da Lisa Bearnson 2 anni fa.

In the second layout we had to use old patterned papers from our stash. I used 3 really old Basic Grey papers from the Oh Baby Boy collection that were gathering dust. I cut out of one of the papers the circle strip which I then attached on top of the striped paper kind of like a ribbon.
I sanded the edges of the photos and hand stitched here and there to give dimension to the layout.
The journaling strips tell of the things Andrea enjoyed the most when we were at Lisa Bearnson's two years ago.

Alcune foto delle centinaia che ho fatto da quando ho cominciato il corso di fotografia "Photographers' Workshop" di Karen Russell, una bravissima fotografa, un'insegnante coi fiocchi ed una gran bella persona!  Il corso è online e dura 9 settimane.
Mi ha davvero aperto gli occhi al mondo della fotografia. Ho tantissimissimo ancora da imparare ma sono già contenta dei risultati ottenuti.

Some practice photos from out of hundreds and hundreds that I've shot during "Photographers' Workshop" held by Karen Russell, a very talented photographer, an eccellent instructor and one heck of a person!  It's a 9 week online class. It has really opened my eyes to the world of photography. I've yet lots and lots to learn but I'm satisfied of the results so far.

Per questo layout ho seguito lo sketch di Sue sul forum di Cocoa Daisy.

For my layout I used the sketch provided by Sue at the Cocoa Daisy forum.



Dovevamo usare l'acrilico o pittura ma non con il pennello. Io usato il brayer - finalmente sono arrivata ad usare anche questo attrezzino - per "spalmare" la pittura bianca. Ho voluto fare una pagina monocromatica su mia sorella americana con i miei figli.
Ho cucito le strisce di carta patterned di cui una è "punchata" con il border punch della Fiskars come anche i fiori di acetato rosa di H.Swapp. Il titolo con i Thickers di American Craft, ed un po' di journaling intorno alla foto e qualche fiorellino di Prima ed il gioco è fatto. Lo stelo dei fiori l'ho creato con un template di Crafters Workshop.

We had to use paint put not paint brushes so I used my brayer - finally I've used also that little tool in my stash - to put the white paint on the background paper. I wanted to create a monochromatic page for my American sister with my kids.
I stitched the paper strips cut from the patterned paper - one strip has a decorative edge made with the Fiskars border punch - as well as the Heidi Swapp acetate flowers. Used Thickers from American Craft for the title, wrote journaling around the photo and added some Prima flowers. I created the stem of the flower with a Crafters' Workshop template.

Credi in te stesso / Believe in Yourself

Questo è il titolo di un altro layout preparato per le ispirazioni giornalieri di Cocoa Daisy. Dovevamo usare 2 carte di Fancy Pants, 1 carta di Sassafrass Lass, 1 cardstock, 5 bottoni, 1 nastro, 1 fiore e la parola "Believe". Potevamo sostituire un elemento con un'altra cosa. Al posto della patterned di Sassafrass, ho usato gli Thickers di American Craft per il titolo. Il mio fiore è un'imitazione dei fiori lollipop di Prima - molto grezzo ma adatto per una pagina maschile. Il titolo l'ho ritagliato dalla carta patterned di Fancy Pants e come nastro ho usato un vecchio nastro di MM. La foto l'ho scattata per il corso di fotografia di Karen Russell che sto seguendo ormai da 5 settimane. Quel corso è F-A-V-O-L-O-S-O e posso dire che adesso so che cosa sto facendo quando faccio foto anche se poi il risultato non è necessariamente eccellente - ma ho fiducia che ci arriverò :)

is the title of my layout, once again created for the daily prompts at the Cocoa Daisy forum. We had to use 2 Fancy Pants patterned papers, 1 Sassafrass lass paper, 1 cardstock, 5 buttons, 1 ribbon, 1 flower and the word "Believe" somewhere on the layout. You could substitute one element. I didn't have any Sassafrass papers so I used American Craft Thickers instead. My flower is a bad imitation of Prima's lollipop flowers. Quite essential and simple, but nevertheless appropriate for a masculine page. I cut out the title from the Fancy pants paper and used an old MM ribbon. I shot the photo for the photography class I'm taking online with Karen Russell. That class is S-U-P-E-R C-O-O-L! I can say that I finally understand WHAT I'm doing when I'm taking pictures. It doesn't mean that the end product is yet excellent, but I'm sure I will get there.. in time. I have faith :)

Voglia d'estate!! /Summer on my mind!!

questa pagina l'ho fatta seguendo ispirazione del giorno sul forum di Cocoa Daisy. L'ispirazione erano gli ombrelloni (potevi prendere la foto, o i colori o quello che ti evocavano). Appena ho visto la foto, mi è venuta in mente la nostra vacanza alle isole Eolie l'anno scorso e Andrea che si gustava la brioche con gelato.
Ho utilizzato il bubble wrap per timbrare un layer con acrilico, ho usato l'acrilico anche per spennellare sotto le lettere d'acetato di H.Swapp (che ho da tempo immemorabile). Non avevo più tutte le lettere, quindi al posto della "m" ho utilizzato una "w" e la seconda "y" l'ho ricavato tagliando un piedino dalla "x". I nastri di carta sempre di H.Swapp sono altretanto vecchie come le lettere quindi sto rispettando la "regola" che mi sono data da sola cioè quello di utilizzare qualcosa di "vecchio" dalla mia scorta in ogni progetto o layout che faccio. Per dare un'altro po' di profondità o dimensione, ho cucito a macchina sopra i nastri. Un po' di bottoni, e il journaling nascosto sotto la foto e voilà!

I took inspiration for this layout from Cocoa Daisy's Daily prompts. There was a picture of umbrellas and we could use either the colors, the photo or what memories it brought us to mind. As soon as I saw the photo I remembered our summer vacation last year at the Eolian islands in Sicily and Andrea with a brioche with icecream - a Sicilian specialty.
I used a piece of bubble wrap to stamp on the background with acrylic paints. I used those also behind the H.Swapp transparent letters for the title. I didn't have all the letters so I used a "w" as a letter "m" and the second "y" I made cutting the "leg" of a letter "x". Gotta make do what you have! The paper ribbons are also from H.Swapp and they are part of my old stash which I use every time I make a new project or a layout. I need to use the old ones in order to make room for new embellies :) To add some more layyers I machine stitched over the ribbons. As the finishing touches I added some buttons and a hidden journaling tag.
